The Six Nations Championship (referred to as RBS 6 Nations for sponsorship reasons), known before 2000 as the Five Nations Championship, is an annual international rugby union competition involving six European sides: England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales. France are the current Grand Slam title holders, having won the competition in 2010 by beating all other teams.
The BBC has secured the UK broadcast and online rights for the Six Nations rugby union tournament until 2013. The deal covers TV, radio and online rights for the tournament, which involves 15 matches between England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France and Italy all shown live over the internet and on television. The BBC said more than 30 million people in Britain and Ireland watched at least some of the 2009 competition.
