The X Factor is a television music talent show devised as a replacement for the massively successful Pop Idol. The competitions are contested by aspiring pop singers, and talent filled aspiring performers drawn from public auditions. The "X Factor" of the title refers to the undefinable "something" that makes for star quality. The prize is usually a recording contract (in addition to the publicity that appearance in the later stages of the show itself generates, not only for the winner but also for other highly ranked contestants). The shows judging panel has had a bit of a shake up with show producer Simon Cowell missing along with fans favourite Cheryl Cole and Dannii Minogue missing. The new panel for 2011 reads like this - Kelly Rowland, Tulisa Contostavlos, Gary Barlow and Louis Walsh

The X Factor is broadcast primtime on Saturday evenings on the ITV Network in the UK and on TV3 in the Republic of Ireland, with spin-off "behind-the-scenes" shows The Xtra Factor and The X Factor 24/7 screened on ITV2 and TV3. The xfactor is shown from August through to December and usually culminates with the winners single as the UK's Christmas Number One in the British Top 40 Single Chart.
