The X Factor is a television music talent show devised as a replacement for the massively successful Pop Idol. The competitions are contested by aspiring pop singers, and talent filled aspiring performers drawn from public auditions. The "X Factor" of the title refers to the undefinable "something" that makes for star quality. The prize is usually a recording contract (in addition to the publicity that appearance in the later stages of the show itself generates, not only for the winner but also for other highly ranked contestants). The format creator is Simon Cowell who also judges and mentors and the show is responsible for the launch of Leona Lewis, who has since gone on to achieve worldwide success.
Louis, Cheryl and Simon are back to judge the latest hopefuls, accompanied by a range of guest judges, including US star Katy Perry, British singer Pixie Lott, former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell, Aussie singer Natalie Imbruglia and Pussycat Dolls’ Nicole Scherzinger – which will no doubt shake things up in the camp!
Dannii Minogue’s maternity leave and Cheryl Cole’s battle with malaria have forced the girls to take some time off, but fans needn’t worry as the lovely ladies will be making a return to the show later in the series.
Each week, viewers will be able to watch as the judges travel all across the country, from Glasgow to Cardiff, putting wannabe contestants through their paces.
Singers will be shown auditioning for one of the four groups – the Girls and the Boys, for those aged 16-24, the Overs and the Groups - before the hopefuls are narrowed down, and each of the four judges are allocated one lot each to mentor.
Richard Holloway, the heead of entertainment at TalkbackThames and executive producer of The X Factor said that the new series will thrill the audience. “It’s incredible to think that there’s still so much new and untapped talent out there. Our guest judges have added a new dimension to auditions, and we’re delighted that such amazing acts continue to audition for their chance in the spotlight," he said.

The xfactor is shown from August through to December and usually culminates with the winners single as the UK's Christmas Number One in the British Top 40 Single Chart.
